The Earth is the LORD’s

Sun rising upon a million souls, Ottawa, ON

By right of creation the earth is the LORD’s. The sun, moon and stars precisely order our days, months, seasons, and years. The animals in all their variety and beauty, each purposely designed, were placed in exquisitely tailored habitat befitting each one. It’s all the LORD’s, created and upheld by His mighty hand in a rhythm as sure and restful as the lapping waves upon a sandy shore.

By right of creation we, the people who dwell upon the earth, are also the LORD’s. He knitted us together in our mother’s womb, numbered our days and established the places we would dwell. It is in Him we live and move and have our being. It is by his kindness and mercy we are given all that we have, all that we need, in spite of our rebellion and ingratitude. Even when we hated Him, He loved us so much that He sent His one and only Son to deliver us from our sins and give us eternal life.

By right of creation we have a duty to this LORD of Hosts. What does the LORD require of us? To love Him with all our heart (Deut.6:5), to act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8). How can we know what that looks like? Take up and read the Bible, for the Scriptures teach us “what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.” (Westminster Shorter Catechism A.#3)
