Something Brief, Something True: An Acceptable Time

Prayer. It is such an incredible privilege and blessing to pray to God. David, a man after God’s own heart, thought so. Here in Psalm 69, David is in some kind of great affliction as an enemy purses him. It seems as there is no escape. In his persecution, he doesn’t surrender, panic, or cross his fingers. Instead, he prays. But as for me

He doesn’t pray to the ‘light’, to the ‘universe’, or some unknown god. David prays to the LORD. The sovereign Creator and ruler of heaven and earth who is the Great I AM. He prays to the only one who can do something for him. From this God, David asks for help. My prayer is to you, O LORD……

Then David waits. We don’t know how long he had to wait. We do know David expected an answer and he knew it would come at just the right time. At an acceptable time, O God….

Have you noticed that answers to your prayers sometimes come slowly? Maybe some answers to your earnest prayers still remain delayed? Yes, I understand. Though some of the cries of my heart have come quickly, some have not. Eighteen years is a long time to wait for an answer. Maybe yours has been even longer.

One thing I know? That the Creator of the universe who loves me with a steadfast love, hears me and is able to answer my request that is in line with his will. This Scripture reminds me that it comes ‘at an acceptable time’. A pleasing time, a best time, which is not yet.

And when the answer comes, it will be overflowing with copious amounts of God’s mercy. Remembering this encourages me to persevere in prayer. For God is working, even in the waiting. In the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness…..
