Today I am joining in on a fun new writing exercise, Something Brief, Something True, with like minded writers who love God’s Word and desire to share encouragement from it.
“And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” Matthew 15:33
There was another great crowd gathered around Jesus and he has ministered to them for three days. He has just said in verse 32 that he was unwilling to let the crowd go home hungry lest they faint. Here in verse 33, is the disciples response—questioning the possibility of such an impossibility.
When I read this verse I am astounded, and kind of offended, at the blindness of the disciples. Jesus very recently (Matt. 14:13-20) fed over 5,000 people with a mere five loaves and two fish. Here, just a chapter later, they have another great crowd—hungry and without food as they face the long journey home. Did the disciples forget so quickly such a great miracle? How could they be so dull?? Then I’m reminded of how often I forget the Lord’s answers to my prayer; how often I fail to go to him with my cares and worries, trials and fears. Instead I question him like the disciples—how will I ever be able to fix this/do this impossible thing?
The Lord has proven so faithful to me in the past, yet how often I fret and worry about many things. How slow of heart I am to believe that my heavenly Father—the giver of good gifts to his beloved children—would know my need even before I do and be working to provide for it! And so once again, I cry out like the father in Mark 9:24, “I believe, help my unbelief!” as I cast all my cares upon the Lord, knowing he cares for me (1 Peter 5:7). May I remember all he has done, and “thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man.” (Psalm 107:31)
May you be encouraged as well.
