Where Has All the Beauty Gone?

School is out. With my lesson planning finished for another academic season, I escaped for a few days of solitude, quiet and a time of seeking the Lord. On my last day away, I explored the seaside town where I stayed and to my pleasure discovered a quaint store boasting the work of artisans from across the region. I love artwork in all its various forms—pottery, jewelry, textiles, paintings—so I quickly stepped in to enjoy these beautiful pieces.

It didn’t take me long to realize beauty, for the most part, was not in this place. Instead I was jarred by vulgarity, disoriented by clashing colour arrangements, and unsettled by base, distorted imagery. Instead of peace I felt overwhelmed with anxiety and a desire to flee.

Somehow, amongst the ugly I found two pieces of beauty—carefully woven rope baskets with form, function, and calming colours. My eyes settled on them and my flight instinct was momentarily soothed. I bought them both.

There are rules and principles to art. Artists know them. As a budding photographer I spent hours learning the techniques of camera use, rules of composition, color theory, and light. So many rules! By learning and applying the principles of one’s craft an artist is able to communicate with the viewer. Beautiful art that is useful and pleasant requires forethought, order and intention achieved as the artist applies the known techniques of their craft.

Sometimes I choose to bend or break a rule because I desire to create a mood that wouldn’t otherwise be accomplished without breaking it. But there is purpose and intention in this rule-breaking; order is still the end result.

Art seems to have taken a detour. Some modern artists seem to be more concerned with creating disorder and ugliness rather than structure and beauty. Broken rules—whether in a classroom, home or craft—result in chaos and disorder. Some people call that freedom. I call it simple rebellion to God’s good and natural order.

Where has all the beauty gone? Nowhere. It’s still plentifully abundant and everywhere, for all to see. I think I’ll join other artists who are faithful to their calling and stick to the rules of my craft. So here you can find art that speaks peace or rejoices cheerfully and allows you see the magnificent creation God has given us to enjoy.

You’re welcome.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8
